About University:

University Campus, Mangalagangotri, is located on a picturesque hillock, spread over 350 acres of land, 18 kms away from Mangalore city. The University has 29 Post-Graduate Departments on the Campus with 208 affiliated colleges/institutions that include 2 constituent, 4 law, 18 education and 5 autonomous colleges. Financial support from different funding agencies for the 29 ongoing Research Projects.
University (A Grade from NAAC) has excellent infrastructure facilities like University Library, MANGALA Auditorium, Cyber Lab with 1 Gbps Internet Connectivity, Sports facilities and Hostels for Men and Women. University is ranked 24 among top 50 Universities in terms of publication output. There are two National Research Facilities namely Microtron Centre and Ocean & Atmospheric Science and Technology Cell. University has 19 Endowment Chairs on areas like Banking, Rural Development, Yoga, Environment, Literature, Fine Arts, Culture, Religion and Regional languages.


About  the Department:
The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Established in 1988 offers a two-year Post-graduate course leading to Master of Communication and Journalism (MCJ) degree and Ph.D Programmes.The department is the first one to get UGC – Special Assistance Programme (SAP) grant in the university and it has completed UGC – SAP DRS, II phase. This has resulted in enhancing the infrastructure of computer Lab, TV Studio and conducting annual SAP funded seminars. Further, UGC has sanctioned Rs. 50.00 lakhs grant under SAP DRS III Phase. Hence,  the Department is getting grants for the last three Plan period.
The department had the rare distinction of establishing an international collaboration (MOU) for conducting the Academic Exchange Programme with Department of TV and Media Studies, Volda University College, Volda, Norway. That is first of its kind in the field of journalism / education in India. It continued for nearly eight years. Both faculty and students from both the countries produced collaborative TV programmes.
The department offers practical training to the students to bring out ‘Campus Courier’, a daily Broadsheet and ‘Madhyama Mangala’, a practice journal and a video magazine ‘MCJ Round-Up’ on a regular basis. The department has organised a number of Regional, National Seminars and Workshops. This includes on Mass Media and Intellectual Property Rights (2005) and Workshop on TV Production.

Ph. D Programme
The Department also offers both full time and part-time PhD programme in its thrust areas such as Media Effects, Audio-visual communication, New Media Technologies, Film communication, Corporate Communication   and Health Communication. 
Research Projects
            The department has undertaken a couple of research projects funded by University Grants Commission (UGC), National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) New Delhi, Dept of the Science and Technology (DST) New Delhi as well as Dept of Information and State Resource Centre, Govt of Karnataka Bangalore.
Public Opinion Poll
            The department has conducted a number of Public Opinion Polls from time to time. This covers Pre- Poll Election Study, “Rationale for separate Statehood for Coorg District” and “Impact Study on” Effectives of Department of Information Dissemination of Government Programmes”.

Seminars
            The department has conducted two national, seven state level and few regional seminars on different dimensions of media. This include UGC – SAP funded Seminars in ‘Media and Environment” and “Media, Politics and Culture” A National Seminar on “Mass Media and Intellectual Property Rights” It has also conducted a two day seminar on Mass Media and Drug/Alcohol Addition sponsored by Dept of Temperance Board, Bangalore. It has conducted a special workshop on ‘Writing for Media” for the members of Public Relations Society of India (PRSI) Mangalore. National Seminar ‘MEDIASCAPE’: Workshop on Writing for Media” March, 5, 2006. It has also conducted Workshop on TV Programme Production twice during the last four years. The department is also organising a Two – day “Workshop on Science Writing for Mass Media” during March, 2014. The workshop is being sponsored by the department of Science and Technology (DSP), New Delhi.

Placements
The P.G. Graduates of the department are well placed in different media such Newspapers, Magazines, Radio, Cable /TV Channels and Web Based News Media within Karnataka and even abroad. A large number of Journalists and mediamen in Bangalore are the products of our department. They have formed Alumni – MAAM – Media Alumni Association of Mangalore University in Bangalore and organising several programmes
